Brainstorming

Every now and then, there are moments that just happen. No thinking about it, just going with the flow, and letting things be. They weren’t common for Chloe, a conscious yet necessary decision that ensured that she had as much control as possible. She wouldn’t admit that she was a control freak out loud, but she wasn’t an idiot.

She also wasn’t blind.

Because those rules applied double for her personal life. So far, her list consisted of an unrequited crush, an ugly short marriage that ended in two deaths and an affair with a serial killer. The saddest part of the latter was that was the nicest she could put it. That’s why she put a pin in her personal life, just trying to have a semblance of life instead.

It was working, she wouldn’t deny that. There was just one problem, as she just happened to work with one of the best looking people on the planet. Chloe knew that most women would trade places with her in an instant if it meant they could touch him like she had. But it was always completely innocent, cleaning up his wounds, applying stitches, trying to show him something.

But what the world didn’t know was the man beneath his finely toned body. Chloe had gotten to know Oliver Queen pretty well in the last few years and it wasn’t the face in the tabloids, likely the furthest from it. He was also the reason that she was standing in the Ace of Clubs right now.

Oliver didn’t know that, but she was tired of him saying that she needed a night off, so she took his advice, signing off of Watchtower and taking off on her own, not wanting to make a big deal of it.  Of course, it wasn’t that easy, as sure enough, he was here too.

It shouldn’t surprise her, this was his cover, this was the story that he had to sell. But that didn’t mean that they had to talk tonight. It wasn’t as if they were known acquaintances since his break-up with Lois, so she moved to the other side of the dance floor, determined to see this night through.

Moving through the crowd, Chloe moved her hands up her body, ready to move to the music and forget that he was even here. Again, she wasn’t blind, she had thought about it. She had seen him practically naked on quite a few occasions, she had watched his morning yoga routine, so it wasn’t like she had never considered the idea of their skin touching for other reasons. But taking that extra step was dangerous, and probably a bad idea, not just because he was her cousin’s ex.

It could last, there was always the possibility, but more likely, with their histories, it would crash and burn. The fallout wouldn’t be worth the highs. They were professional people, but the team dynamic would be thrown off and that was worth preserving more than any potential personal happiness.

And with that, he evaporated from her mind, the crowd blurring around her, so Chloe closed her eyes, enjoying the feeling of letting go while she could. It wouldn’t last, she knew that, but once it faded away, she could appreciate the view from the bar, maybe even people-watch.

Fingers threading her hair, she took a step backwards, ready to open her eyes, but she would never see what came next. Her back collided with someone and she had a feeling this was no stranger behind her. Her familiarity with his chest muscles wasn’t that good, but based on the stillness of both of them, there was no other option.

Chloe waited for him to walk around her, say hello, say something, but instead, they were the only two people standing on the dance floor.  Looking at the crowd around her, there was no one looking at them, there was no one they knew here, it was just them in this moment.

That didn’t change the facts she lived by for the past few months. But none of them were coming to mind while he stood behind her. Neither were the fantasies that came to her head when she let herself think about the possible perks. She had weighed the pros and cons as fantasy and reality respectively, but now everything was hazy and she didn’t know what that meant.

So she did what seemed like the most natural thing. She started moving again.

Not running away, her usual defensive mechanism, but taking a step forward to give a small barrier to start dancing. A small voice told her that acting naturally led to the least awkward conversation tomorrow, it would eliminate the unnecessary apology, her returning to her old habits. But Chloe quieted that voice because while it was valid logic, it was a big lie for why she made this decision.

Because it wasn’t long before withdrawal kicked in, so she glanced back, streaming her fingers down his arm and he picked up what she was doing.

It wasn’t a surprise to see him hesitate. That was merely a sign of how well he knew her. The way that he knew exactly which buttons to press without going too far. It was a skill that also applied to his hands curling around her body. Each movement was a baby step, steps that Chloe didn’t anticipate, but as her head rested against his chest, she relaxed into their synchronized movement.

Even that wasn't a surprise to her. They had their differences, but when it mattered, they were usually on the same page. They had taken turns saving each other from a dark place and although the gratitude was barely spoken, it was understood.

That pain, that gratitude, it allowed them to grow a lot closer. Most of that growth happened as the result of hanging out more, just the two of them, and now that she was standing here, she started to notice the little signs that he gave her, especially in the last few months. She remembered how much he made her smile and that they made a pretty good team. Then there were the lunches and the coffee excursions that she let him drag her out of Watchtower for.

That got her thinking… just how many of her walls had he taken down?

Biting back a moan, Chloe pushed any answers aside to focus on arching her back, knowing the sound wouldn’t have made much difference. It wasn’t like he could see her face, or he could hear it over the loud music in the club. But it wasn’t supposed to feel this good this fast.

Then again… why not?

It wasn’t like there wasn’t any attraction on her side and the fact that he managed to see her and find her in the crowd within five minutes of her arrival spoke more than anything else he would do tonight. Well, maybe anything other than the fact that he went along with this.

Oliver had to know that she knew that it was him behind her right now. That meant he let her make this decision, he didn’t let her talk herself out of it. He didn’t push her away, because she was drunk, or this wasn’t what she wanted, or she was only satisfying his request to relax.

He trusted that this was her decision and he was still behind her. He didn’t mind this type of proximity or intimacy. Maybe all of those failed stolen glances meant more than she thought.

But she was tired of thinking, as it was distracting her from the feelings that he was bringing out of her. It was just like him to make her want to turn her brain off, and tonight, she wanted nothing more than to do just that. But there was one more thing she had to do first.

Taking a small step forward, she felt his hands fall away from her, a subsequent chill going through her body. Normally, this would be her wake-up call, her well-intended exit, but tonight was far from normal.

Instead, she turned around, ready to see him, his reaction. Again, they were two frozen people on the dance floor with an inch, maybe two between them. Oliver was fighting his words, likely because he wanted Chloe to break the silence, as his mind was made up. One look in his eyes cemented that.

Placing a hand on his hip, she watched his mouth stretch to form a grin. Because they couldn’t say what they had just done was fantasy, they couldn’t pretend that it didn’t happen, that the closeness in their relationship didn’t exist. Furthermore, as much as they wanted to think that this was point of no return, Chloe knew that that moment was long gone.

She didn’t regret it, touching his arm, backing into him, wanting more. Not because it gave her the other side of the debate, but because it allowed her to stop debating and act. After all, actions speak louder than words.

And the moment their lips collided, Chloe knew that she made the right choice.

~End~

Sera’s Scribbles: Weirdly enough, this was inspired by a fanvid for another couple… which introduced me to Taylor Swift’s "Blank Space." A weird song to inspire this, but it’s just catchy enough to ensure that there was no way I was forgetting this idea while I was on holidays. I was going to wait to post this, but then decided against it so I could focus on my other stuff, instead of editing this more. I hope you enjoy it and that you're having a great holiday season!

No problem. I will admit that I'm deliberating a companion piece in Oliver's point of view, but it likely won't be for awhile.

What a great gift!

Aw, thanks for this! My two favorite parts:

...the fact that he managed to see her and find her in the crowd within five minutes of her arrival spoke more than anything else he would do tonight.

And especially - ...she was tired of thinking, as it was distracting her from the feelings that he was bringing out of her. I think there were so many times Chloe almost thought herself out of their relationship, so I loved this line.

Sorry for the comment delay, I had a pretty busy Christmas. Hope yours was fantastic! <3

Thanks! I admit, I wasn't going to do a companion piece... but now it may be happening anyway, so I'm glad you're looking forward to it.

Again, thank you! To you as well :)
